Parts Kit
Quantity

In this workshop, we'll build the Scotto40, a handwired 4×10 ortholinear mechanical keyboard using a matrix with diodes. You'll have the option to source the parts yourself or choose a complete parts kit that includes everything you need to build the keyboard except the required tools. The kit even includes pre-cut solid copper wire for the rows and columns.

We'll assemble the keyboard together live on Discord, and I'll be there every step of the way to guide you through the build, answer questions, and help if you run into any issues. We'll cover installing the switches, soldering the columns and rows, wiring the controller, and finally flashing Vial firmware. By the end, you'll have a fully functional keyboard and the confidence to continue building handwired projects on your own.

You'll also receive lifetime access to the private Discord channels, where you can ask questions, share your builds, get feedback, and connect with other students even after the live sessions have ended.

Parts Kit

You're more than welcome to provide your own parts and purchase access to the workshop only. However, to make things easier and ensure everything is correct, you can also add a complete parts kit. The kit includes Outemu Red switches by default, but you're welcome to substitute them with any MX-compatible switches of your choice.

Choosing the parts kit means you won't have to source any of the keyboard components yourself; all you'll need are the tools required to assemble it.

Included with the kit:

  • 1 - 3D printed Scotto40 case and plate
  • - Rubber feet
  • 1 - 16mb RP2040 Pro Micro
  • 1 - 10m roll of 30 AWG silicone wire
  • 1 - 3m roll of marine heat shrink tubing
  • 1 - ScottoCoiler diode coiling tool
  • 10 - M2x5mm countersunk screws
  • 5 - M2x8mm standoffs
  • 14 - Pre-cut 18 AWG solid copper wire
  • 40 - 1N4148W DO-35 diodes
  • 40 - Outemu Red switches
  • 40 - 3D printed keycaps
    • 34 - Concave 1u
    • 4 - Convex 1u
    • 2 - Homing 1u

You will need the following to complete the build:

  • Digital soldering iron
  • 63/37 LEADED solder
  • Wire strippers
  • Flush cutters
  • Small screwdrivers
  • Butane torch
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors
  • Permanent or paint marker
  • Hot glue or UV resin

If you choose to provide your own parts, please make sure they match what is listed above. Workshop time will be focused on building the keyboard rather than troubleshooting incompatible or incorrect parts. Also note that the keyboard in the image has fuzzy skin enabled, the one you get won't be fuzzy like that.

Shipping

Registration closes on August 16, 2026, and all parts kits will be shipped shortly afterward, giving approximately four weeks for delivery before the first workshop session on September 13, 2026. If you're located in the United States, any available shipping method should arrive well before the workshop begins. If you're ordering internationally, Economy shipping should also arrive in time under normal circumstances due to the four-week shipping window. However, if you'd like peace of mind, I recommend selecting an expedited shipping option.
